Raiders Complete Sweep of Wheat Kings

on Saturday night
Dylan Busenius’ goal with just under four minutes left in the third period lifted the Prince Albert Raiders to a 4-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night.

Busenius’ shot from just inside the blue line on the right-wing boards deflected off a pair of Wheat Kings’ players and past Brandon goaltender Jordan Papirny, who had a solid first start of the regular season with 27 saves.

“I thought he made some real good saves.  The save at the start of the second was as good a save as you’re ever going to see,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “He was solid.  We expected that we would be, and he was.”

Richard Nejezchleb scored 4:23 into the first period as the Wheat Kings got off to a much better start than they did in Friday’s 8-6 loss to the Raiders, a game that saw Brandon surrender four first period goals.

Craig Leverton tied the game for Prince Albert in the final minute of the first period, with Rihards Bukarts of the Wheat Kings and Leon Draisaitl of the Raiders exchanging second period goals to send the teams to the third all even.

The game had an intensity level to it that isn’t normally seen at this stage of the regular season.

“I thought it was a real good hockey game.  Both teams played really well, disciplined, really good game,” said McCrimmon, “I really thought that our team responded very well, and the disappointing part was not taking points out of the game because, certainly, our effort was good enough.”

Nejezchleb and Bukarts both finished with a goal and an assist each for Brandon, who’s record fell to 2-2-0-0 with the back-to-back loss in Prince Albert.

The next action for the Wheat Kings is Wednesday when they open a five-game home stand by hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Ryan Pulock signed an ELC with the NY Islanders Saturday
Earlier on Saturday, the New York Islanders announced that they had signed Wheat Kings’ captain Ryan Pulock to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Pulock was the Islanders first round pick, 15th overall, in the 2013 NHL Draft.

“Ryan’s done a lot of work over the years, he’s put himself in a perfect spot. He’s put the time in, he’s an elite player, an elite defenceman in the Western Hockey League and the contract is well deserved,” said Brandon assistant coach David Anning prior to Saturday’s contest, “He’ll be an excellent pro whenever that opportunity presents itself, whether it’s this year or beyond.”

The contract doesn’t necessarily change a lot about whether or not Pulock spends the 2013-2014 campaign with the Wheat Kings, but was something the Islanders needed to do if they intended on keeping him around to start the NHL season.

We’ll likely find out more about the Islanders’ intention when NHL teams submit their 23-player rosters to the league for salary cap purposes on Monday.
