Roy Set for Season Opener

Eric Roy is ready for the Wheat Kings' season
opener on Friday in Moose Jaw
Eric Roy was back at practice for the Brandon Wheat Kings on Thursday afternoon after the 19-year old defenceman was sent back to Brandon by the NHL's Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

Roy missed a chunk of the Flames' training camp because of an abdominal strain buy said after Thursday's practice that he's been cleared to play.

"Everything's good.  I got cleared by the doctor on Tuesday. They said I could play and I get sent home Wednesday.  I'm just looking forward to starting the season with the Wheat Kings," said Roy, "You want to get off on the right start.  Being at NHL camp was a great experience.  I definitely learned from it and I'm bringing that back to junior."

Roy's return leaves only captain Ryan Pulock still away at an NHL camp and helps stabilize a Brandon defence core struck by injury along with Pulock's absence.

19-year old Nick Walters is out for 6-to-8 weeks after he undergoes surgery on a knuckle on his right hand and Taylor Green is out for two weeks with an upper body ailment.

"Just consistency.  I watched a couple of pre-season games, getting hard back for pucks, working hard every day," said Roy when asked what he learned the most at NHL camp, "Just learning from the older guys, the veterans.  Mark Giordano really taught me well, and I just learned from them."

Pulock, by the way, will play his second pre-season game on Thursday night when the Islanders visit the New Jersey Devils.

He was just over 17 minutes of icetime in his pre-season debut Tuesday, a 5-3 loss by the Islanders in Calgary.

Chaff...if and when he returns, Pulock will become the first player to captain the Wheat Kings in back-to-back years since Tim Konsorada in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005...Brandon has yet to announce their alternate captains for this season, but expect that announcement sometime Friday.  Roy, 20-year old forwards Chad Robinson and Jens Meilleur and second-year defenceman Colton Waltz are good bets to fill those roles.
