The 20-year old told me last week that a family issues that will require him to travel back-and-forth to Calgary frequenetly was the reason he chose to activate his WHL scholarship and end his Western Hockey League career
"It was kind of a decision I had to make with my family in regards to being back-and-forth between home and here," said Swyripa, "Over the course of the summer, things kind of piled up on each other and aafter a long summer of training, had a talk with the family and made the decision together."
Swyripa was a second round pick of Brandon in the 2008 Bantam Draft and spent three seasons with the Wheat Kings from 2010 to 2013.
I asked him what he'll miss most about being a Wheat King.
"Just being with the guys, day-in and day-out. You really develop a lot of friendships in the room and with people that come to watch the Wheat Kings and who cheer for the Wheat Kings," said Swyripa, "A lot of things that kind of build on one another that you will always remember."
Swyripa intends to follow in his family footsteps and study Geology at Brandon University, adding the program at BU was more in tune to his needs than that offered at the University of Calgary.
"After moving here when I was that young, I realized that it felt like home and I felt that this was where I wanted to be," said Swyripa, "I love the town, I love how friendly the people are. I love everything about it and being a smaller town, you get to know quite a few people and I've made connections here that will last a lifetime."
In 200 career games as a Wheat King, Swyripa scored 25 goals and 61 points while accumulating 114 minutes in penalties.
