Kale Clague scored a first period power-play goal for Brandon on Sunday afternoon |
Jesse Gabrielle opened the scoring just 1:14 into the first period and helped set up Kord Pankewicz for the second goal of the game just past the eight minute park.
Kale Clague added a power-play goal for the Wheat Kings in the opening 20 minutes.
“We had a good start to the game which, on the road, helps you get your feet under you,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I thought, for a lot of the night, we did things pretty well. Our game was probably more consistent tonight than it was on Friday, which we were expecting with it being our second game.”
Gabrielle, Taylor Cooper and Jack Palmer had a goal and an assist each for the Wheat Kings with Chad Robinson also scoring for Brandon.
Brandon held a 5-1 lead before Moose Jaw rallied with a goal late in the second and two in the first eight minutes of the third period, but the Wheat Kings dug in their heals and held a one-goal lead for almost 12 minutes before Palmer solidified the win with an empty-net goal.
“In that situation, our guys did a pretty good job in protecting the lead,” said McCrimmon, “A lot of those players, that’ s a new responsibility for them so it was good to see them in those situations.”
Curtis Honey went the distance in the Wheat Kings’ net and finished with 31 saves.
Todd Fiddler had a hat-trick for the Warriors while Sam Fioretti also scored for Moose Jaw.
The victory leaves the Wheat Kings with a 1-1-0-0 pre-season record, having fallen 4-3 to the Warriors in Brandon on Friday night.
“All of our players got equal ice-time, pretty much, throughout the two games. We were encouraged that our second game was better than our first and I was encouraged that we had a lot more structure in our second game than we had in our first,” added McCrimmon, “It was perfect because when we kept the game simple tonight and played with structure, the way that we want to, we were in control of the game. When we got away from those things...we got in trouble.”
Brandon’s next pre-season action is Friday when they host the Regina Pats (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
