Wheat Kings' Walters Out Indefinitely

Nick Walters
The Brandon Wheat Kings will be without defenceman Nick Walters for at least the first two months of the Western Hockey League regular season.

Walters is slated to go under the knife to repair damage to a knuckle on his right hand, with recovery and rehabilitation time after surgery expected to be six-to-eight weeks.

"It's not the best timing for me, and it's not the best situation but no time is a good time for an injury," said Walters, "I'm just focused now and getting me surgery, getting my rehab done and getting back as soon as I can."

Walters says he's had problems with the knuckle for quite some time but aggravated the injury while playing with St. Louis at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament earlier this month.

"Over time, just from playing and the type of game I play -- physical, sometimes I fight, sometime I'm in the corner and I bang my hand up against the wall, stuff like that," said Walters, "Just over time, the wear and tear finally did it in.  Right now, it's the worst it's been in a long time."

Walters had nine assists and a -15 rating in 29 games with the Wheat Kings after being acquired at the January 10th trade deadline from Everett, a deal that also saw Brandon acquire the rights to forward Taylor Sanheim while sending blueliner Ayrton Nikkel and a conditional sixth round pick in the 2015 Bantam draft to the Silvertips.

"The doctor told me to not even try (playing through it) because the more I bump it, the worse it gets," added Walters, "I'd rather stay away now for a little bit than do it really good and have permanent damage.  I want to play it safe and be back as soon as I can."

Walters isn't the only Brandon defenceman nursing an injury.

Taylor Green missed both pre-season games on the weekend with an upper body injury and is expected to miss at least two weeks while Eric Roy skated at the Calgary Flames' training camp Sunday after missing a week of action with an abdominal wall strain.

Additionally, captain Ryan Pulock is still in camp with the New York Islanders and is expected to make his NHL pre-season debut on Tuesday night in Regina, when the Islanders play the Calgary Flames at the Brandt Centre.
