Another Quenneville Joins Wheat Kings

Peter Quenneville in action last season with
the USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints.
The Brandon Wheat Kings returned home from a 12-day road trip early Monday morning, but it's been far from a quiet 30 or so hours since.

Jayce Hawryluk has been named the WHL and CHL Player of the Week after scoring six goals and eight points in three games last week, captain Ryan Pulock was named to Team WHL for the Subway Super Series and, today, the Wheat Kings added 19-year old forward Peter Quenneville to their roster.

Quenneville's rights were acquired by Brandon from Prince George for a third round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, with Peter leaving Quinnipiac University in order to join the Wheat Kings.

Peter is the younger brother of current Wheat King John Quenneville, making his decision to come to Brandon a little easier.

However, that doesn't appear to be the only reason why he left U.S. College to come to the WHL.

"He was drafted by Columbus, and I think he just wanted to be in an environment where there was a real focus on development and an opportunity to try and improve as much as he can as a player," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on Tuesday, " His goal was to sign with Columbus either at the end of this year or at the end of his 20-year old year.  That combined with the fact that John plays here were really the motiviating forces for him."

The 5-foot-11, 185 pound Quenneville had four assists in five games with Quinnipiac this season after scoring 33 goals and 70 points in 63 games with Dubuque of the USHL, helping the Fighting Saints claim the USHL title last spring.

Prior to suiting up for Dubuque, Quenneville played two seasons for the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 2010-11 and 2011-12 and was named AJHL's Most Valuable Player in his second season after scoring 31 goals and 81 points in 53 games.

"He's a guy that is real good on the power-play, he's a right shot, he's got the ability to really create offence.  He'll be a guy that fits in really nicely on our team given that we've only got one other 19-year old forward," said McCrimmon, "We'll see where he fits in and what exactly his role is as time goes on.  I think he's going to be a guy that will is ogoing to make a contribution night in and night out.  He's 19-years old but he's a first-year player, there'll be an adjustment just like any player coming to the league new but I think he'll pick that up pretty quickly and be a guy that makes a
difference for our team."

Czech import Richard Nejezchleb is the only other 19-year old forward currently on the Wheat Kings' roster.

Peter Quenneville is expected to arrive in Brandon late Tuesday and could practice with the Wheat Kings Wednesday although he's apparently been hampered by a lower body injury lately and will need to have the injury assessed before hitting the ice.

By the way, the youngest brother of the Quenneville family, David, is a 15-year old defenceman who was selected by Medicine Hat tenth overall in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft.

Chaff...the addition of Peter Quenneville gives the Wheat Kings 25 players on their roster -- 16 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders.  16 forwards is probably an excessive number so it won't be surprising to see Brandon make another move to address that in the near future.
