Ryan Pulock gave Brandon an early 1-0 lead when he scored the 50th goal of his career 1:32 into the opening period but Jaedon Descheneau tied the game for Kootenay with a power-play marker at the 8:57 to send the teams to the break in a 1-1 tie.
John Quenneville restored Brandon’s one goal lead 3:53 into the second period as he snapped an eight-game goalless streak and the Wheat Kings preserved that 2-1 advantage until the marketing timeout midway through the frame.
However, the Ice controlled the final eight minutes of the second period with Sam Reinhart and Levi Cable scoring goals 1:35 apart to give the Ice a 3-2 lead through 40 minutes.
“We had a 2-1 lead, they tied it, we had the 4-on-4 situation and they went ahead 3-2,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Really from that point on, we never did really get the momentum back the way we had established it earlier in the game.”
Brandon had a chance to restore momentum to start the third after Zak Zborosky was given a delay of game penalty right at the end of the second period.
However, the Wheat Kings failed to capitalize with the man advantage and, more importantly, failed to recapture any momentum.
“The power-play at the start of the third was inexplainable, quite frankly,” said McCrimmon, “We never had any urgency or any execution on it whatsoever. A full two minute power-play to start the third, rested on good ice in a one-goal game, that’s a pretty good opportunity to get back into the hockey game.”
Reinhart scored his second of the game on another Kootenay power-play midway through the third period and Rinat Valiev scored the Ice’s fifth goal late in the frame to make the final 5-2.
MacKenzie Skapski, who missed eight games with a lower body injury, made his first start since November 5th and made 24 saves in the Kootenay net while Jordan Papirny stopped 33 shots for Brandon in what was his 11th consecutive start.
The loss was Brandon’s third in a row (0-2-1-0) and dropped the Whaet Kings back to the .500 mark on the season at 13-13-1-0.
Brandon’s next action is Friday when they pay a visit to the Moose Jaw Warriors.
