Wheat Kings Fall in Overtime

Sawyer Lange scored 18 seconds into overtime as the Prince Albert Raiders downed the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 on Saturday night.

The Wheat Kings were unable to hold onto a 4-2 third period lead, with Leon Draisaitl scoreding with 6:53 left in the period and Chance Braid getting the tying goal with 11.1 seconds left in regulation.

"When you commit to having your puck battle on the wall like we did, you have to win and you have to make sure you come out of the pile ahead of them.  That was part of what went wrong on the tying goal, and then just awareness of people in behind, I think that also factored into it," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "Just a combination of things that we didn't get the job done, that was the bottom line."

Chad Robinson's shorthanded goal 5:53 had given Brandon the 4-2 advantage after Tim McGauley and Rihards Bukarts had scored the only two goals of the second period.

Brandon fell behind 2-0 in the first period with John Quenneville getting the Wheat Kings on the board before the end of the first frame with his fourth goal in the last two contests.

"It's disappointing for sure to lose like that," said Brandon centre Chad Robinson on CKLQ's post-game show, "What we have to take out of it is that we need to learn to hold onto a lead and stay composed in the last period.  It's something we've talked about before and it's something that we need to keep working on."

The loss leaves Brandon with a 14-13-2-0 record and with 30 points, good for eighth-place in an Eastern Conference where five points separate fourth from ninth-place.

The Wheat Kings next game is Wednesday when they host the Regina Pats (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...Winnipeg Jets' first round pick Josh Morrissey had a goal and an assist for the Raiders...the line of Richard Nejezchleb, Peter Quenneville and Tim McGauley finished a combined -10 in Saturday's contest while D Eric Roy and Ryan Pulock were -5 and -4 respectively...the Wheat Kings will hold their ScotiaBank Skills Day on Sunday, with doors opening at 2:00 p.m. and the event starting at 2:30 p.m.
