Jayce Hawryluk notched his first career WHL hat-trick on Friday |
Brandon scored three power-play goals in the opening five minutes of the first period after Everett forward Dawson Leedahl has handed a checking-from-behind major just 35 seconds into the opening frame.
Richard Nejezchleb, Ryan Pulock and Jayce Hawryluk scored on that man advantage, with Hawryluk later adding a pair of even strength goals to record his first career WHL hat-trick.
“Our team really responded well with that opportunity early in the game. We often say that it might be the only power-play that you get which in fact, as the night went on, it was the only power-play we received,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Guys responded really well and I thought our execution was really good.”
Rihards Bukarts added an empty-net goal for Brandon with Josh Winquist scoring two and adding an assist in a losing cause for Everett.
Jordan Papirny made 35 saves in the Brandon net including 22 in a third period during which the Wheat Kings were outshot 24-5.
The Silvertips scored twice in the third to turn a 5-1 game into a 5-3 game and cause some anxious moments for the Wheat Kings in the final frame.
“I think we need more composure still when we have those situations,” said McCrimmon, “We talked about it a couple of times that it’s happened, it just not something we’ve done a great job with.”
Brandon is now 8-9-0-0 overall heading into the final game of their six-game road trip Sunday in Lethbridge.
