Reinhart Hatty Leads Ice over Brandon

Ryan Pilon scored his first goal as a Wheat Kings on Friday
Sam Reinhart’s hat-trick paced the Kootenay Ice to a 7-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

Kootenay lead 2-0 after the first period and extended their lead to 5-0 by the midway mark of the middle frame by scoring three times in a span of four minutes and 56 seconds.

“I thought it was going to be critical that we score next in the second period and they score to make it 3-0 off a really soft play by us defensively,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I thought that took the want out of us, and it then went to 5-0 before we started to play.”

Peter Quenneville and Ryan Pilon, with his first as a Wheat King, scored before the second period ended and Ryley Lindgren made it 5-3 5:07 into the third period to give Brandon the thought of a comeback before the Ice closed things out with the final two goals of the contest.

“There was a point in the third where it looked like we might be back.  When we made it 5-3, I thought we had momentum and were getting chances,” said McCrimmon, “If we make it 5-4, it really would have put the pressure on Kootenay.”

Jordan Papirny made his tenth straight start in goal for Brandon and stopped 13 of 18 shots before relieved by newcomer Christopher Tai, who stopped eight of ten shots over the last 39:35 of the contest.

The regulation loss was Brandon’s first on the road since October 30th and dropped the Wheat Kings to 13-12-1-0 overall.

The two teams will play the second half of the doubleheader on Saturday night in Cranbrook (7:30 p.m. 880 CKLQ).
