Four-Goal Second Period Powers Blades past Brandon

  The Brandon Wheat Kings close out a five-game home stand with a 5-3 loss to the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday night.

  Saskatoon scored four goals in the second period, three of them coming after a significant momentum swing after it appeared the Wheat Kings and crawled back into a tie after falling behind 2-0.

  Brett Kitt's apparent tying goal was disallowed, with Kitt receiving a goaltender interference penalty and Saskatoon scoring on the subsequent power-play to turn a 2-1 lead into a 3-1 advantage.

  The entire sequence of events come just moments after Richard Nejezchleb's seventh goal of the season and pulled Brandon to within one.

  The Blades then added a pair of even strength goals before the end of the middle frame to push their lead to 5-1.

  "We just have to learn to take those situations and counter them and push back," said Brandon defenceman Rene Hunter on CKLQ's post-game show, "That was the big point for us."

  Hunter and Kitt, with his first career WHL goal, scored in the third period for Brandon, who had plenty of scoring chances throughout the contest.

  However, it was the Blades who did a better job of capitalizing on their opportunities including scoring three power-play goals.

  "We had a pile of chances tonight, I thought our first period was had a lot of energy and a good start to the game.  I think they had four goals on 13 shots or something like that," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "Our penalty-kill was terrible tonight and we didn't get save for Jordan (Papirny) when we needed them and we didn't capitalize on the chances we had, and certainly we had a lot."

  Papirny finished with 22 saves in the Brandon goal while Alex Moodie stopped 39 shots in the Saskatoon net.

  Ryan Graham, Cory Millette, Nathan Burns and Nikita Scherbak had a goal and an assist each for the Blades with Cameron Hebig scoring the other goal for Saskatoon.

  The loss left the Wheat Kings with a 3-2-0-0 record on their home stand and 5-4-0-0 overall.

  "We didn't get the job done here tonight so it just makes it average, and that's not we're setting out to be is average, we're setting out to be a good hockey team," said McCrimmon, "If you're going to be a good hockey team, you have to do a better job on a five-game home stand than we did."

  Brandon will now play eight of their next nine games on the road starting with Monday afternoon's contest in Regina (2:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
