Wheat Kings Double Tigers

Captain Ryan Pulock had one of the goals for Brandon Saturday.
The Brandon Wheat Kings got goals from six different players in a 6-3 victory over the Eastern Conference-leading Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday night.

John Quenneville had a goal and two assists for Brandon while Jayce Hawryluk, Richards Bukarts and Richard Nejezchleb all had a goal and an assist each.

Brandon jumped out a 2-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes, just the third time in 12 games this season the Wheat Kings have led after the first period, and extended the lead to 4-1 before the end of the middle frame.

"I thought hard work and we had structure to our game, and that gave us something to revert back to even though we didn't play as well in the second ir the third," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "It at least showed we were in the game and ready to play."

Ryan Pulock and Braylon Shmyr also scored for the Wheat Kings, who improved to 7-5-0-0 overall and 5-2-0-0 on home-ice this season.

Curtis Honey stopped 43 shots in the Brandon net including 33 over the final 40 minutes of the contest.

While he seemed busy, Honey didn't feel they were hemmed into their own zone a lot.

"We were really bearing down tonight with that, and just playing smart," said Honey, "The biggest thing is (Assistant coach Darren Ritchie) came in and said if we had fewer turnovers than them, we're going to win...we weren't turning the puck over as much tonight, so it was good."

The Wheat Kings also sported one-time only Pink Jerseys during Saturday's game, with more than $20,000 raised through the auction of the jerseys.

"The excitement level was unbelievable, guys were really fired up to play," added Honey on CKLQ's post-game show, " I'm sure there are guys on the team that have known someone that have gone through cancer.  To be able to go out and play for something like that, the stakes were just that much higher."

In addition to the jersey auction, volunteers from the Cancer Society sold special “Pink the Rink” t-shirts and raffle tickets for another Wheat Kings' jersey.

Close to $25,000 overall was raised in this year's campaign for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Chaff...Wheat Kings' F Jayce Hawryluk left the game late in the second period after being hauled down from behind and sliding into the end boards...Brandon's next game is Friday night against the Chiefs in Spokane, the first of six straight for the Wheat Kings on their longest road trip of the season...Brandon's next home game November 7th against the Saskatoon Blades.
