Patrick Bartosak stopped 33 shots to lead the Red Deer Rebels to a 4-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night. The loss was Brandon's first one home ice this season after starting with three straight wins, and dropped the Wheat Kings' overall record to 4-3-0-0.
Brandon had 35 shots in contest but 19 of those came in the second period, with the team recording eight in each of the first and third periods.
It was the final frame that didn't please Wheat Kings' GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon ths most, saying his team lacked structure over the final 20 minutes."It's river hockey, it's pond hockey," said McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "When we chase the puck around and abandon systems play, it can't help but become individualistic because people can't trush each other to do the things we need to do as a team."
Richard Nejezchleb and John Quenneville scored the goals for Brandon while Curtis Honey made 24 saves in the Wheat Kings' net.
For Nejezchleb, it was his sixth goals in as many games this season but the Czech import would have rather have had the win.
"I'm happy I have a goal per game but we just lost a game," said Nejezchleb, "I think we need to compete harder in games and if I score, I'll be happy."
Christian Stockl, Vukie Mpofu and Wyatt Johnson all scored their first goals of the season for Red Deer with Dominik Volek adding an empty-net marker.
Brandon will continue their home stand on Friday night when they entertain the Moose Jaw Warriors (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
