Killarney product Reid Gow had four assists to pace Spokane to a 7-1 victory over Brandon on Friday |
Killarney product Reid Gow set up four Spokane goals with Eric Roy netting the lone goal for Brandon on a 5-on-3 power-play late in the third period.
The Chiefs scored four of their seven goals in the third period including three in a 3:06 span to turn what was a relatively close game into a blowout.
“We didn’t work in the third so you get what you deserve when you don’t work,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Probably, we had played pretty good in stretches through forty minutes. We really had a tough time scoring even though we had a lot of really good opportunities to score and I think that inability to get on the board really took the belief factor out of our team.”
Eric Williams stopped 35 shots in the Spokane net and was named the game’s first star while Curtis Honey and Jordan Papirny combined for 21 saves in the Brandon goal.
While the third period was the final nail in the coffin, the momentum shifted early in the second period as well.
Despite trailing 1-0, Brandon had outshot Spokane 10-4 in the opening frame but an Eric Roy penalty late in the first period gave the Chiefs the man advantage when the second period started.
Spokane capitalized on the power-play that had carried over from the first period and then added their third goal just past the four minute mark to grab a 3-0 lead.
“We talked about the importance of that kill to start the second period, and we didn’t get it killed,” said McCrimmon, “If we could have got the penalty killed, built on some of the positive things that we had done in the first period, had a little momentum from the penalty-kill, I think it would have helped us in the second period and, in turn, the reverse happened.”
Brandon will continue their road trip Saturday night when they visit the Tri-City Americans (8:35 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
