Wheat Kings Fall in Tri-City

The Brandon Wheat Kings fell to 0-and-2 on their six-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night.

Michal Plutnar and Lukas Nickles scored first period power-play goals for the Americans as Tri-City jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

“Curtis (Honey) should have saved both goals, for me, they were point shots both times without traffic,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We took three penalties in the first period, they scored twice on those opportunities and I felt that really put us in a hole.”

Jessey Astles added Tri-City’s third goal just 2:24 into the second period before Taylor Cooper got Brandon on the board with his seventh of the season with 2:35 left in the middle frame.

The Wheat Kings had a chance to cut further into the Americans’ lead when they were granted a pair of power-play chances early in the third period but were unable to capitalize, and then Brian Williams restored Tri-City’s three-goal lead just before the midway mark of the third.

“Just find a goal on one of those two opportunities to make it a 3-2 hockey game and then it’s a much different final ten minutes,” said McCrimmon, “But, we were unable to do that and I look to that stretch as pretty disappointing.”

Winnipeg Jets’ draft pick Eric Comrie stopped 24 shots in the Tri-City net while Honey finished with 25 saves for the Wheat Kings.

The loss leaves Brandon with a 2-5-0-0 road record this season and a 7-7-0-0 mark overall.

The Wheat Kings get a couple of off days to regroup before continuing their road trip Tuesday night against the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Chaff...F Tim McGauley, who left Friday’s game in Spokane with an upper body injury, was a game-time decision and was able to be in Brandon’s lineup, but didn’t play a shift after the midway mark in the first period...Cooper’s goal was his first against an opponent other than the Moose Jaw Warriors this season...Brandon has lost five of their last seven meetings against the Americans.
