The Chiefs are 10-3-0-0 heading into Friday’s home game against Brandon, the best record in the WHL, while Gow has 12 assists, 12 points and a +11 rating in those 13 contests.
“We just play a greasy game, play simple and try to do our game and not to get trapped into playing other team’s games. We have Holmberg and Aviani getting lots of points this year and they’re playing unbelievable,” said Gow after Chiefs’ practice on Thursday, “Our goaltending has been stellar throughout, all our D has been laying down and blocking shots and all our forwards, we have a pretty mean forecheck and, hopefully, we can keep that going.”
The 19-year old Gow had 51 points in 64 games in 2012-2013, more than double his point total from his first two years in the WHL combined.
A former first round pick in the Bantam Draft (16th overall in 2009), the former Southwest Cougar took some time to find his game in the Western Hockey League.
“At 16 and 17, I wasn’t comfortable and wasn’t playing my game, I guess, but at 18, they gave me a chance,” said Gow, “I played with a very good friend of mine and an incredible player in (Brendon) Kichton and it was awesome to have him and we had a great season and we did well.”
Gow is not only helping to replace the production Kichton, a Winnipeg Jets’ draft pick, provided on his way to being named the WHL Defenceman of the Year in 2012-2013 but he’s also filling Kichton’s skates in another way.
The 6-foot-0, 190 pound Gow was named the Chiefs’ captain during their home opener on September 28th.
“It’s an incredible honour to be proud of, and I’m more than proud to be the captain of this team,” said Gow, “There’s been some unbelievable captains when I’ve played here with Jared Cowen my first year, Darren Kramer and then Brendon Kichton were all incredible guys and incredible leaders and I wish I can be half the leader they were on this team because they were unbelievable.”
The Chiefs’ start and being named captain are just two of the big things to happen to Gow over the last two months.
He also had a chance to play with St. Louis at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament alongside other Blues’ prospects like Brandon product Joel Edmundson and current Wheat King Nick Walters.
“It was unbelieveable to be in Traverse City, in the tournament there and playing games against other NHL prospects and it was awesome to see how you compared,” said Gow, a former WHL Scholastic Player of the Year, “To get that taste is awesome and I hope, moving forward, it can work for me too.”
