"It's a great team building experience for us. Anytime you get to take part in something like this, it's pretty special," said Brandon assistant coach David Anning, "These guys are dedicated to our country, and it's pretty special spending a day with a bunch of hard-working guys that are very team-oriented and very goal-oriented. I think our guys can take a lot away from today."
The team were guests of the Second Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and received a briefing on the military code of conduct, and also had a chance to do some activities such as running the obstacle course and some weopons training.
"We're just getting a glimpse of what these guys go through during a day, we owe it to them," added centre Chad Robinson, "We wouldn't be playing hockey if it wasn't for these guys risking their lives for us."
The players also got a chance to talk to the soldiers about their experiences in the military and also visited the firing range where they had 'dinner in the field' with the members of 2PPCLI.
"I think these guys use a lot of teamwork, and I think we can take a lot of that from here back to our dressing room," added Robinson, "We've done that so far today, some of the guys are getting pretty competitive here at the obstacle course, which is good to see."This is the fifth straight year the Wheat Kings have made this type of visit to CFB Shilo and, along with getting to know their military neighbours, they also feel it's a good team-building experience
"If you look at the way these guys operate, they're structured, they always work together, they don't leave anybody behind, they talk about communication, helping each other out," said Anning, "Those are all things we can take out on the ice."
The Wheat Kings return to action Friday when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
