Shorthanded Tallies Do In Wheat Kings

  Shorthanded goals from Chase De Leo and Nic Petan 28 seconds apart late in the first period helped propel the Portland Winterhawks to a 5-2 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday night.

  The loss was Brandon’s fourth in a row and dropped the Wheat Kings to 7-9-0-0 overall including a 2-7-0-0 mark on the road.

  Taylor Leier opened the scoring with a power-play goal 52 seconds into the first period but it appeared the Wheat Kings would survive a period in which they were outshot 17-6 until the final 66 seconds.

  That’s when De Leo and Petan scored the shorthanded markers that turned a 1-0 game into a 3-0 game.

  “We needed to either capitalize on our power-play or, in a worst-case scenario, head into the break down 1-0 and regroup a little bit for the second,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We didn’t help ourselves in that situation at all and it ended up pretty much being the margin of victory as the night went on.”

  Rihards Bukarts and Ryley Lindgren scored Brandon’s goal, both coming in the third period, while Curtis Honey stopped 48 shots in the Wheat Kings’ net.

  “He was real solid.  I thought he played very, very well and couldn’t be faulted on anything he did give up,” said McCrimmon, “If it wasn’t for him, we would have given up some more.  He bounced back from a night off and played very well.”

  Keegan Iverson and Winnipeg product Brendan Leipsic had the other goals for Portland with Brendan Burke stopping 30 shots in the Winterhawks’ net.

  Brandon’s continues their road trip Friday when they visit the Everett Silvertips (9:05 p.m., 880 CKLQ).
