Wheat Kings Grab Shootout Win

Jayce Hawryluk had a goal and an assist in regulation and
added another goal in the shootout for Brandon Friday.

  Jayce Hawryluk and John Quenneville had a goal and an assist each in regulation and Richard Nejezchleb scored the shootout winner as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 on Friday night.

  It appeared for a while that Brandon's special teams might cost them a victory.

  The Wheat Kings' power-play was 0-for-4 through 40 minutes and Moose Jaw had netted power-play goals from Torrin White and Tanner Eberle in the middle frame to take a 2-1 lead into the third period.

  However, Quenneville's goal with the man advantage with 5:53 left in regulation set the game to extra time and Brandon had two penalty-kills in the third -- one early that preserved a one-goal deficit and one with under two minutes left that allowed the game to continue.

  "We scored the late power-play goal, which is critical, and we always talk about what your special teams do for you in key situations and I thought that was important for us," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "The penalty with 1:57 left was another time where our kill, I thought, did a good job."

  Quenneville now has goals in three straight games while Hawryluk played probably his best game of the young season, scoring his second goal 7:54 into the first period and playing a physical, gritty style throughout the contest.

  "Every night I want to give it all and, tonight, I just did that again," said Hawryluk, "Especially against division rivals like Moose Jaw, we need to get two points so I just want to have all the enery I can give and hope the guys feed off it."

  Curtis Honey stopped 27 shots in the Brandon net while Justin Paulic stopped 39 shots for Moose Jaw.

  Excluding empty-net goals, Friday's contest with the sixth straight one-goal game the Wheat Kings have been involved in.

  Brandon is now 4-1-0-0 at home this season and 5-3-0-0 overall.

  The Wheat Kings conclude their five-game home stand by hosting the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...Brandon F Jack Palmer left the game early in the second period after a hard hit from Moose Jaw's Josh Uhrich and did not return...Nejezchleb's winning goal was the first shootout attempt of his WHL career...the crowd of 4,056 was Brandon's largest since the home opener.
