Cooper Burns Warriors, Again

Taylor Cooper scored the OT winner
Wednesday in Moose Jaw
Taylor Cooper scored his second goal of the game 1:51 into overtime as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Moose Jaw Warriors 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Ryan Pulock sent the game into overtime, notching the game-tying goal with 17 seconds left in the third period.

“I thought our guys had good poise during that stretch,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We haven’t been good with the goalie out this year, not only have we not scored been successful in terms of scoring but we’ve given up empty-net goals so I thought, tonight, guys were more poised in that setting.”

Coming through a stretch where they’d scored eight goals in four games, the Wheat Kings generated enough scoring chances but were unable to solve Moose Jaw netminder Justin Paulic, who made 34 saves, for most of the night.

Cooper’s two goals were both came on second-chance opportunities in loose pucks around the Warriors’ net.

“We need to find ways to manufacture more goals and score more second chance goals, goals from the hard areas, all of those things that we’ve talked about,” said McCrimmon, “I think Taylor Cooper is a perfect example of a guy that needs to add that to his game.  He’s a good skater, he’s got good skill but he has to get to the harders areas and I thought he got rewarded tonight.”

Curtis Honey stopped 30 shots in the Brandon net including breakaway opportunities for Todd Fiddler and Sam Fioretti in the opening two minutes and a right pad stop on Torrin White during a goalmouth scramble midway through the third period.

“I did not think we were as good defensively tonight as we have been.  Some of our mistakes led to real good scoring chances for Moose Jaw and that’s where I thought Curtis was real strong for us,” said McCrimmon, “Early in the game, we made some good saves and he made some good saves with the game on the line to keep it a one-goal game.”

The win was Brandon’s fourth in as many games against the Warriors this season and improved the Wheat Kings’ overall record to 6-5-0-0.

Brandon’s next game is Saturday when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
